Avon Independent Representatives On HubPages

By Lady Guinevere

Through writing on Hub pages and becoming a new Independent Avon Representative I have come across many who used to sell Avon. There are also Avon Representatives who are currently selling on here as well. The Company Logo says the Avon is The Company For Women, but there are men who sell Avon as well. They work it as a business and an investment and not so much as a side job or anything like that. The Top Avon Sales are Men and there are many who make lots of money.

Avon used to only sell makeup, but now they are in a position to sell a kinds of product lines to meet the new customer needs. They even have a MARK side of the Company which is geared to those who are looking for more natural products.

Back when I used to sell Avon there wasn't the Internet and one had to go door to door to sell. They did use to have Brochures By Mail and they would mail out a brochure to each of the Representative's customers if they put them on the list. I liked that because I moved out of the area where I was selling Avon. Avon put me out of business when they stopped the Brochure By Mail program. That was in the late 90's. I had to quit because I new no one at my new place and didn't have the time to find them. We moved to a vacation home community and most of the people that had homes here would only visit them off and on and I was unable to get my business really started. It was just bad timing.

I have tried many other venues to work from my home after that and nothing seemed to pan out. I did give each and every one of them the ample time they needed.

I had an Avon Representative, or so I thought until I saw her ask for a job on my FB., Well that put me out of getting Avon because she was the only Representative that I knew in my neighborhood. Instead I just signed up to be an Avon Representative again. I have found that the landscape in this business has changed in the years that I had not sold the products.

Among the situations that I have found the top ones that Avon Representatives are facing is the lack of responsible Avon Representatives. I have a few customers who have told me that their old Avon Representative took their money and they never got their orders and the girl just up and left them with no way of contacting her. Trust is a big issue in today's sales and marketing field.

Another one is the opposite, where a customer will order product and not have their money when you take the product to them. Avon has tried to prevent this problem and now has a presence on the Internet where you can order your product online and pay for it right there. They have a choice for the customer of either having the order delivered to her Avon Representative or you can have it delivered directly to you.

Now I have met many Avon Representatives here that used to sell Avon and those that Are Selling Avon. I am currently writing reviews and such about Avon and their products here when I can get the chance and I am also an Independent Avon Representative.

I would like to bring all the Avon Representatives together here so that we can get acquainted, talk about Avon or the Representative Experiences and just help each other out if need be. The would be for those Avon Representatives who used to sell the products too. I think it would be fun to have a fellowship of Independent Avon Representatives here on Hub pages. Take a moment to answer the Poll here if you will please.

**If you notice all or most of the google ads are Avon Products.  Just click on them and it most likely will send you to Avon.Com wehre you can select an Avon Representative in your area.**

I have been an Avon Rep on and off over many years. Because of the fact that i live way out in a rural community there was never the customers to make me any sort of income. I just enjoyed the books and products and of course getting my products at a cheaper rate.

Loves To Read, thanks for coming by. Yep the discounts are the great. I, too, live out in the country and am not really making any money at it, but it helps with Christmas Gifts right now. I am trying ti do my business on-line and a very few are picking up on that. I do hope that it snowballs though pretty soon. Since being out in the country the winter will prevent me form making deliveries from my place, but the Avon would and can deliver to their rather easily.

geegee, Thanks for coming by. That is great news! I should add my other hubs to this as well. I shall do that in a bit. I just tell others about the product. Although I am not making any personal sales from this hub stuff or even on my FB, I am helping others get sales. I guess it will turn around soon--I hope!

That's a grand idea for each of us to post our hints and tips to help each other.

Avon calling!

signing in my Dear, past rep a few times over. :D best and most fun job I ever had, My youngest boys were little then and they helped me sort and bag orders. They loved when the orders came in, it was always a bit of xmas for them. Every now and then I get that hankering to sign up again. :D hugs :D

Sa'ge, Thanks for visiting. Yes, it is like Christimas when the boxes come. It is more like Christmass when you know you are giving a gift that the person really wants. My husband helps me put everything together and he also helps me deliver and put out my brochures. He's a trooper! He also goes to sales meetings with me.

How about Men? Are there any here on HP that sold or sells Avon?

I am not Avon representative since Avon no longer existed in my country. But it is still interesting to know Avon already broader their product and not just stuck with cosmetic only.

I always feel interesting on how Avon representative and everyone who work in this area can really sell the product. I am not really a talker in real life so selling never good job for me. Still, the successful of representative ladies brought out my curiosity.

Good luck with your business, Lady G and all Avon ladies here. :)

Freya, What country is that? You can still be a part of this group. I am a talker, but only if I know someone to talk to. It's crazy and it's a little like "stage fright". Since I live on a mountain and the winter is bad, and my health is as it is (walking Time Bomb here with 3 past DVT's) I need and want to sell on-line. I have a few but not enough that order consistantly from my on-line store. I have advertised in as many places as I can think of, but ---I dunno, I thik it will take some time.

Thanks for coming by.

I became a full-time Mary Kay Cosmetics consultant in 1980 and became an Independent Sales Director with my own sales unit in 1982, which I continued (both as a personal consultant in my own business and as Director for my unit, which is earned by successfully selling and recruiting in that company) - till I married in 1985 and decided to retire. The set up may be different in Avon, but the keys to success are the same.

It was a very intense but gratifying business and I did well enough to drive a pink Cadillac. I had left a good job as an Engineering Department Asst. Supervisor at a building company and before resigning that job had taken the GRE to start back to school to get my Masters of Business Admin. But I decided to go straight for the business administration of my own business as a Mary Kay Independent Consultant.

I mention this only because it might encourage you to stick to your Avon sales business and think of it as a business (which you probably already do!) - Work it like you would if you had a store literally and leave no stone unturned to find & contact new customers. I did something called "warm chatter" - as shy as I was in the beginning -I learned to strike up a conversation with the lady at the produce counter looking over the lettuce next to me or the waitress who poured my coffee at the shop. People are there - but you must reach out to them. And it's important to be immune to rejection because there is an absolute SET statistical balance by which you will only get 1 "yes" out of any 5 to 10 requests you make -at any level! So the"no's" become steps to "yes''s"!!

Good luck with it, dear. You have a good heart, too and sincerely wanting to HELP people look and feel better is half the formula to success.

THINKING POSITIVE AND DOING THE LEG WORK is the other half.

Nellieanna, you are correct that the two companies and probably all direct sales run the same way. Thank you for the encouragement. It is also now said that you have to show or have that brochure in front of people 5 times before they think about purchasing. That is up from the 3 that it used to be several years ago.

Thanks for stopping in.

I live in Indonesia. They said Avon made big merger with Oriflame here, and there is only Oriflame left. Like I said before, I am Oriflame Lady for personal used. Using 30% off to buy all fragrance lotion I use. Hehehe...

Freya, That is wonderful! Stay here because you are an Avon Lady too. Avon also bought out Silpada Jewerly here as well and I don't know what happened with the Silpada name becaue Avon isn't using it. They are incorporating lots of the jewelry into the product line and they are shoing up in the brochures too.

Good point, Lady G. Some time, if you'd like to hear, I could tell you more about statistics. Let me ask you - do you recruit other Avon representatives? If not, how does Avon get them? Do you pre-buy the products to sell out of your home and then the markup is your profit or does Avon ship them to the customer directly and pay you a commission?

Lady Guinevere profile image

Lady Guinevere Hub Author 19 months ago

Nellieanna, Thanks for comeing back. This is tarting to be a wonderful place to meet and learn!

I think we all would like to hear the statistics.

I did recruit, but right now I am not going to because of the New Rep Trainer's problem. If you want ot know mor about that I can e-mail it to you. I had two new recruits and now I don't.

We don't have to have an invetory at all, but we do have to buy our books and samples. We put in our orders to Avon and what the differnce is in the amount we pay and the amount the customer owes is our profit, minu the brochures and samples or whatever we want to purchase. We still get a discount on all the products except the Cancer Awareness Products. The profits form those items go right into the program and we don't make any money off of those. Avon also has a Domestic Abuse Program and the items for that run the same as for the Cancer Program. Avon has way lots more than just cosmetic and makeup. I could list all the things they do sell but it would take some room on here. I can tell you that they bought out Silpada Jewelry and is selling those and will have a product line for babies next year.

The statistics matter is what is in force when you get two recruits and now they are gone. At every level the attrition and the 4 to 9 "no"s for a "yes" or for a someone to stick with it AT THAT LEVEL which won't be the end level and then to go to whatever the next step is -follows the statistics right along.

So if it took 5 calls or books to get one person asking about it, it will take five of those askers to get one who will try it and 5 tryers to get one who will use it and five users who will become a steady customer. In each of those stages, the accumulation of those approached and either not interested in going any further or trying to but falling by the wayside is a REAL factor.

It needn't be a discouraging factor if is expected and the numbers are worked with for the successful results. But it means that in 5 steps from giving the books to getting a customer you may have actually dealt wilh HUNDREDS of people - and will still be losing some right and left. But what is really discouraging to most who try that business is the expectation that most of the contacts one makes should yeild results. It is quite the opposite. But if you think you're not succeeding when the real statistics are operatong - as they ALWAYS are - then you'll feel really badly about your skill and think you're not cut out for it or something. The truth is that even the very best sales person has a 5 to 1 ratio (remember the way it multiplies in each step too). But the good news is that even the worst sales person is almost sure to get 1 out of 10 just because the statistics are so impersonal and objective. If the 1 out or 10 person will stick to it he or she will outdistance the 1 out of 5 person who gets discouraged because it's only 1 out of 5!

I asked about recruiting & pre-buying inventory primarily because when one starts to bring others into the setup, now one must try to get them to succeed. That part is OK. But there are the same statistics at play with getting & keeping PEOPLE as with selling the product. When it's product one knows it's between herself and her own willingness to face the numbers and keep on keepin' on.

When one brings in others to help build her base of operations wider and begin to advance up the ladder (which is not a mere lateral climb but really is up the diminishing side of a pyramid where the air gets rarer and rarer and the statistical heap of wanna-bes and losers supports it), it is a whole different feel; - or it was for me. I tried so hard to get everyone to do it. I assured young husbands and kids that their wife and mom could do it. And they "could" but statistically I realized that they wouldn't, only one out of five and one out of those 25 etc. . . . So I had to look them in the eye and say Yes she Can! Knowing that few of them would. And they had to buy inventory to get started or be limping along even more, with most other consultants able to provide it at the time of sale. That is when it really could hurt the husband and kids, in addition to having her gone so much if she was really serious about it.

Anyway- it was one reason I was willing to give up a really really good start on the "top". In fact I realized I couldn't in good conscience do it any longer, once I saw the total reality of it.

Sounds like perhaps Avon has a way around some of that, but be assured that it IS a numbers game and without talking to a LOT of people constantly - it won't be the dream you dream of. But you CAN do it.

You have a lot of spirit for it!

I just like the smile on the face of giving something to someone who wants it and is happy about it. I will write you a PM about why my 2 recruits left and it didn't included in the numbers.

I am a Sales Leader struggling because of 4 different people taking ove my territory then calling me up and arguing its their territory when in fact it is mine. I dont like stepping on others toes it is not nice... I am fed up with people taking over others area when all they have to do is ask for more lol. that is a very good piece off blog that!!!

Jennifer, I quit Avon a week ago because I couldn't get more customers to order on-line. That wasn't the only reason though but a part of it.
