A True Farm Market

Imagine going to a place where you can smell the fresh produce from a hundred feet away. Take a deep breath and let the aroma of sweet and tangy apples, pumpkins, peaches, blackberries and strawberries tickle your nose. Smell the sweet fragrances from home made pies, breads and other delicious foods. There is nothing better than hand picking apples of many varieties from huge bins filled to the brim. You know you are getting the best and the freshest fruit and produce around. It is better for you and after eating one of these apples or other fruits you will never go back to store bought again. A good shopper will find her way to the "Seconds" or the over ripe fruit on tables. These are the fruits that aren't picture perfect. They are just as good. I love getting the overripe cantaloupes. What a deal at half the price. How fresh and good is that!

Orr's is a Farm Market, not a Farmer's Market. They aren't a conglomerate of farmers selling their produce. Orr's Farm Market grows and sells everything right there down on the farm and it is completely Family Owned. You will find some other hand made goodies from around the area like Honey's, Jams and Jellies and a few baked good mixes, fresh milk, cheeses and meats but 90% of what they offer there is grown down on the farm.

Where The Good Things Grow

Orr's Farm Market is located right in the center of the huge farm, in the valley, nestled between North Mountain and Apple Pie Ridge. Apple Pie Ridge got it's name because there are many many Apple Orchards throughout the area. Coming up the mountain from Martinsburg you can see a sea of fruit trees. Apple trees are not the only fruit that grows here on the slopes of these mountains. Peaches and Pears grow here too. It is truly a beautiful sight to see in the Spring when all the flowers are a-blooming. Pink and White blossomed fruit trees cover the mountain hills like lace of a bride's wedding trane.

When entering their road you are flanked on the right side by their new collection of animals and birds. In the first area there are Bison and this Spring they had a plentiful bounty of new babies. They had a naming contest and the winner got a stuffed toy of that kind of animal.

Along with the Bison they have Long Horns, Peacocks and Pygmy Goats with their babies in tow. They are fed near the fence daily and when riding down the lane you can see them up close. All the babies are cuties. For now they are only used for show, but later on they may use them for different reasons. I can see them entering them into the County Fair along with the produce.

Once you are past the fenced in areas where the animals are you are welcomed by rows and rows of fruit trees, Strawberry Hills and Flowers for Cutting on both sides. When you enter the parking lot you will see loads and loads of fresh fruit in bins along the front and side of the building. On the right is their processing plant. They process their produce, package and ship right from the farm. They don't ship it to other places that pack for them. In the winter months they sell their apples and other home made goodies in nice neat packages. These are great for Christmas Gifts!

Orrs Farm Market is where the good things grow--produce and animals alike. Lots of love comes out of this farm.

Come taste their Apple Butter Mac Smoothie and Red Raspberry Banana Smoothie, Apple-Banana Smoothie & Berry, Berry Good Smoothie, Red Raspberry Banana Blast Smoothie & Black and Blue Smoothie!! Tom, thanks for dropping in. Yes, it is a wonderful time of year!

I shop at this market once every two weeks, when my husband gets paid. I spend lots there! I love apples--all kinds of them. My favorite one now is the Ginger Gold.

I probably won't get there any time soon, but we do buy apples at places that sell either their own or for other producers. I gennerally try to by the seconds or windfalls since I use them for cooking.

dahoglund, thanks for visiting. Oh those "seconds" are the best. I don't care if they look perfect or not, they still cook up good. They also have "Deer" apples and I aksed them what they were. They just told me they were like the "seconds" and that the farmers usually gave them to the deer. I eat them. They are just as good as the bigger ones. I have seen them feed those apples to the collection of Long Horn and Buffalo too. It's all good!

Good Morning Lady Guinevere, having grown up on a farm in Western Pennsylvania not far from Morgentown, W. Va, I was able to relate to your Hub very well. Brought back memories from home. I am an apple pie lover and Apple Pie Ridge, W.Va. will be remembered. Thanks Lady Guinevere and God Bless!

CYBERSUPE, A good morning to you yourself! Mt husband's family is from Oil City and his sister and Father now lives in Pittsburg. I reall love going to this farm. I never had the chance to go to one when growig up. I love the smells and feel and the gentle and very kind people that live and work there.

Hi Lady G,

I too am a fan of the smell of fresh foods, not just fruit and vegetables but the salty tang of sea air in a fish market, or the aroma of real cheese, not the plastic imitations of the supermarket.

Of course I also love the smell of home baked bread, homemade jams and pickles all of which take me back to another life that seems a lifetime ago.

How luck you are to have found such a jewel in our shrink wrapped world.

Merlin, thanks so much for coming to my "smelly" hub!! LOL. Yes Some people around here still don't know about it. It is advertised everyone!

Thanks for the wonderful personal tour of Orrs. Sounds like this family is making a huge contribution to the agri-business best of WV.

WV is near and dear to my heart, and I'll plan a trip to Orrs when visiting friends nearby. Isn't WV just the best place in the country for celebrating apples? Missing the Apple Butter Festival in Salem this year. Darn!

Lady Guinevere 20 months ago

Sally, There is also one in Berkeley Springs too. This place has grown so much, but I love the back roads and these Orchards. They are almost everywehre on the west side of I-81. In the Fall the soft mountain have such wonderful smells and color! The colors are so beautiful but the don't compare to the Spring when all the orchards first bring in the season with their own visual and sensory highlites with thei blossoms. Winchester is know for their Apple Blossom Festival that runs the first week of May.

What part are you from and where are you now? You can get some travel things on my hubs about this area. One is Traveling through the Norther Shenandoah and the other is taking a tour through the Eastern Panhandle.

Thank you for your touching description of our family farm. Our orchard business is our family's passion and we plan to keep the beautiful 1,000 acres in fruit production for a long time to come. With thoughtful and enthusiastic customers like you...it should be a bright future! Thanks Debbbie!
