Tips To Keep Bugs Away

Our animals are so important to us. We want to keep them as healthy as possible and that includes keeping nasty insects from doing harm to them It is estimated that the major cause of disease transmitted through a very small insect, the tick and the flea, has done the most damage to the insides of our furry friends. It is a daunting task to keep up with all the attacks every year and to stay ahead of the game. That game being to keep the critters off of them in the first place.
I also had a friend and also myself bit by spiders. She is currently under large quantities of anti-biotics for her spider bit. A few years ago I also had a spider bite. I didn't know that it was a spider bite at first. My toes and ball of my foot swelled up and I didn't pay much attention to it because I thought that it was something that I stepped on and it would soon go down. After 3 weeks and my skin began to peel and the swelling was worse than it had ever been, I went to the ER. I was a little shocked at what the doctor had told me. He told me that spiders don't bite people. Now I don't know if he was being sarcastic or funny, but going to the ER to get this kind of thing checked on, I didn't think it was so funny. My husband didn't either. I was given some anti-biotics too. I went home and did find a spider's nest in between the bedsheets at the bottom of the bed--just where my feet would be at night. Suffice to say, I check my sheets often. We live in the woods and we expect critters to be in the house, but, they are not welcome to sleep with me.
I feel sorry for the friend that is going through that treatment because she says that she is very sick on those meds and has to take them for a week. She mentioned to me about the Avon Skin So Soft and I did know about using it for animals. Funny how things don't always come to mind until it is brought up because talking with her reminded me of something that she could do to protect herself and her family from bug bites. Several Recipes for Your Horses
I used a variation of the fly sprays:
6 caps full of Skin so Soft
1 cup white vinegar
just a good squirt of Ivory liquid soap
filled a 32 oz Bronco Spray bottle with water
Sprayed it on the horses legs,
Fly Repellent
2 cups white vinegar
1 cup Avon Skin So Soft (Bath oil)
1 cup water
1 tablespoon eucalyptus oil
Horse Insect Repellent Mix
1 oz. Citronella Oil
2 oz. Skin-So-Soft (Avon) or Coat-So-Soft (Rio Vista)
1 Cup Cider Vinegar
1 cup Water
Mix in a 20 oz. spray bottle.
Recipes for Dogs
Dawn dishwashing liquid does the trick. Add a few drops to your dog's bath and shampoo the animal thoroughly. Rinse well to avoid skin irritations. Goodbye fleas.
1-cup Avon SSS bath oil 1-cup white vinegar 1-cup (or more) water 5 cc of essential oil of citronella (from the health food store NOT the type you burn to keep insects away that is available in a drug store) Mix in a spray bottle. Straight SSS works well for mosquito’s too but really makes your dog greasy.
Avon Skin-So-Soft wiped on pets keeps insects off and drives ants away when it's wiped on countertops and the kitchen floor.
Skin So Soft for People
People have the same problem as horses, dogs and cats of the annoying bug variety. We constantly swat at flies and mosquitoes and dread any attacks of the tick variety let alone spiders, deadly centipedes and roaches. Wow this is a very informative article. It sounds almost as if a backpacker can take only this bottle, and a few essential oils with them, to cover a vast list of little problems along the way.

LG - That is a very good and useful article. Bugs can get you if you let them do so. We use a lot of cedar products around our place. For example, we spread cedar wood granules throughout the yard - no more fire ants and the mosquitoes hate to come around here. For our critters we use cedar oil spray. Both come from a company with outlets in Spring, Texas and Conroe, Texas. They have a website where you can get info on their cedar-based "Best Yet" (used in Iraq by our military to ward off sand fleas that nothing else seemed to bother).

Gus, thanks for stopping by and your wonderful, helpful comment. I have tried to use cedar here only the cats will not sleep in a bed with that in it. My dog will not either. I don't know why but they just won't. I even tried hiding some cedar shavings under the cat's bedding and they will not lay in it at all.
Skin So Soft has been around for years and it does work and the animals really don't seem to mind it.
I have piece of paper with all the uses of SSS from ten plus years ago :O) Always forget about it though.

I can vouch for the effectiveness of this product, I used some today as a matter of fact and I haven't found anything quite as effective! I have to service equipment in places that are full of chiggers, can't see ems and red bugs. My wife gets it from her mother.
Cool. I have a customer that bought the big bottle a few weeks ago and told me that she only uses it for her dogs.
For years my Grandparents used Skin So Soft to get rid of "No-See-Ums" at the beach where they lived. It was amazing how well it worked.

WOW I haven't taken a look at Avon Skin so soft in a while they have a new product. My ex husband complained about the smell, he didn't like any scents period and I had to give up my beloved skin so soft but now.... thanks to you I can take it up again and I'll remember my pets. Peace :)
Katiem2, Thanks for finding this hub. Yes, they do have new scents. Ask your Avon Representative for those trial sized bottles of it. The are ususally with the deodorants or around there in the brochures. The Original still smells the same though. If you don't have a rep you can take a look see around on my site. When you get there just click on go to my shop and type in Skin So Soft in the search bar at the top and it will give you all the Skin So Soft products. You can do the same with the Bug Guard.

Insect bites can be a problem especially for those that might be allergic.
