The Seven Deadly Sins
These are the Catholics version of the 7 Deadly Sins, but no where in the Bible does it have these listed as such. Are these new or just for specific people's. I think neither. They were borrowed from another society. Look at the story of Pandora's Box. It is a myth or so they say.
1. Pride 2. Avarice (Greed ) 3. Envy 4. Wrath 5. Lust 6. Gluttony 7. Sloth
Finally she couldn't hold her curiosity down anymore. She opened the box, and from it flew hate, anger, sickness, poverty, and every bad thing in the world. She slammed the lid down and managed to trap the final evil still in the box: hopelessness. So today, even when the going gets tough, every human still has hope.
Now why would all these be taken from the Greek Myths and put in the Bible unless someone put them there on purpose. Who and what purpose would they have for that? These are all common sense and there is no special-ness about them.
Where they written down on a scroll and then the scholars just put them in because they thought that they were good to do so? There are lots of things that are in the Bible that came from other cultures and people's and there are lots of mistranslations too. Now some of you will say that it is not true, read them for yourself. Read about all the other stories of creation. What I wonder about is who was there in the beginning to write it all down. I mean Genesis. Who was there to remember that many years ago? If God destroyed every man but Noah and his family then who wrote it down and was it just their account or was it made up because they needed some kind of explanation? Now where in the Bible does it give the indication that Noah knew how the world started.
Back to sins--lying is a sin, isn't it. So is deceitfulness. Have we all been deceived? Don't go saying it was and is Satan because if you look and read the Bible yourself it says that he will do miracles--so did Jesus and so do we think that miracles are only by God today. But are they? Have you seen the Devil or Satan to know what he (of course it has to be a he--right?) looks like?
When did females become evil and stupid and why did they do that? Why did she believe Satan? Why did Adam believe her? Didn't he have his own mind? Why is the blame all on Eve and in other myths women too? Are we not part of man--so if one blames the women then they also blame themselves.
Every culture and peopl's have an account of how the world started. Every cultures know right from wrong. You know in your heart when you have done wrong--at least most of us do. Sin is borrowed from every culture of the world and it is not just for one people's and not one people's is the only truth and way. We all share it from every corner of the world. Sin is not evil...it's an effect of doing something to cause that effect and it can be a good thing gone sour as well. How's the saying go.....The best intentions--so they can't all be bad.
One other note that I didn't have a place to mention---SIN is also a God in Egyptology. I mean it is a person not an act.
Jesus said at the end--if you believe it was the end--to God forgive them for they know not what they do?

Very interesting hub! I've also read that "sin" means to miss the mark, which I think makes more sense than the conventional use of the term.
...and how often we think only of the sins of commission and not of the sins of ommission. Thanks Lady G for an illuminating hub!
The thing that I always liked about Pandora's box was that she let 'hope' into the world along with all the miseries and troubles. And for me hope is light in the darkness.
Hey...I am not a scholar, but I'm not sure the seven deadly sins are anywhere but catholicism...at least the list isn't. While the Bible probably mentions similar sins, and your hub is more than obviously correct, I'm leaning towards catholic churches being the only church with the seven sins labeled as "deadly."
In the Bible I use...which isn't any different than mot of the others (catholic Bibles are ammended by the church rulers, at least they used to be) the deadliest sins were hypocrisy and pride. Obviously pride is a listed sin. Seems like the list is almost redundant, though, isn't it? Or is it just me? :P
Yip, once again excellent hub. I like to say, "when it comes to God we are all innocent." I found that my "blind and ignorant" faith in Love and in my own personal spirit of self and understanding what love is, has shown me the way, and built into this love is knowing that everything will be Ok.
God told me so. :) Like you mentioned on the other hub. "they too" did the same thing to me. When they felt it was good, it came from God, when I failed to comply with their regulations or beliefs, it was Satan. lol.
We aren't the only ones either. :) I didn't read that one, but I know I will. :)
nice hubs
just some thoughts:
A foolish one is one who lights his touch in the daylight and says, "look how glorious my light is follow me for surely I know the way."
A wise one lights his tourch in the dark and say to the man who is fool, "now surely a light lit in the dark has more purpose for I am certain now I can see what was hidden in the dark." :)
The fool continues to say, "but all that is light is truly beautiful."
The wise replies, yes but your tourch light seems rather dim. :)
LG...exactly why I'm not catholic ;)
You have an internet congregation? That's awesome. It's using modernisation to bring good news to people who might not otherwsie receive it!
We learn from our mistakes and to be worthy of His love and go to heaven we must understand what life is about....We all need each other for many reason's in the likeness of God...So don't worry just listen...follow your heart...be kind and obey the 10 commandments....Thanks for a wonderful hub my dear...G-Ma :o) hugs
well sweetie thank you...my computer was down for 8 days....good tobe back G-Ma :o) hugs
I popped in to read abit Deb, and got side tracked reading another's blogger. I found it very entertaining that the blogger has approval over whether the comment appears or not. Censorship at its finest. To funny.
Most of the so-called 'Sins" were made up by sex starved Irish Nuns (or were they sex-starved?) to take it out no Roman Cathoics who were denied getting pleasure from sex. Sex is for procreation only. It is NOT to be enjoyed.
I happen to know of many convents in a city I shall not name for obvious reasons, that had the private phone numbers of doctors who could "correct" the mistakes made by nuns.
Dearest Lady Guinevere, this is a great Hub on "Sin" AKA "Pandora's Box" When you discuss Adam and Eve, you missed the mark though I think. It is not the sin of Adam and Eve that is transferred to us, But the sin of "Adam"
It was not the eating of the fruit that caused the downfall.
Adam was the MAN he was responsible for Eve and her actions.
Had Adam chastised her and immediate confessed to God that he had failed in his responsibility over his wife Eve, instead of trying to lie his way out of it, blaming Eve, and if Eve had accepted her responsibility instead of trying to blame satan, the serpent, God might have forgiven them.
But Adam lied by not accepting the blame of his wife's messing up, a lie of ommission, as Adam was the head of their family, thus responsible.
Sincerely,
Brother Dave.
Interesting hub. I think men started all this "evil woman" thinking because women have power over them, and it scares them. They tend to want to control women in order to feel safe and secure, but of course we would also like to do the same thing to men. The problem is that if either sex can do this, we get real bored with the person involved, and look elsewhere. Still, since men had more physical power, they were often able to impose much of this thinking, which did not work to their advantage. One reason men have such a reputation for womanizing and cheating on spouses, if because they have managed to control the thinking of society to such great extent against women, that women are boring to them, and they have to keep switching to find anyone with any spunk. I don't buy into the Eve shit or any of those stereotypes. Men would be more loyal, and happier, if they had more of a challenge to such boxed thinking. So much for religion; I've just preached my own sermon. (:v
In the Douay Rheims Bible I believe the deadly sins are in Galatians Chapter 5, there are a lot more than seven. I'm not sure where the terms "Seven" deadly sins came from exactly.
Try this link for those wanting to read.
There are many parallels between Eve and Pandora. Good hub, Lady G. Thank you!
