What No Milk??

Cows Milk, Americas Staple Food
There has been many articles and websites for and against the use of milk in our society today. Our society pushes cow's milk on us from the minute that we are born to the moment that we die. It is so ingrained into our lives and minds that if we even think about not drinking that white smooth drink that is supposed to fortify us with vitamins and calcium in bring fear to our minds.
We are taught that the only way to supply our bodies with calcium is only by Cow's Milk. This is not true at all. There are all kinds of vegetables that have a high rate of calcium.
For people like me who are Lactose Intolerant it is a very serious decision weather I drink that creamy white liquide or not.
LACTOSE INTOLERANCE
Fifty million Americans experience intestinal discomfort after consuming milk, cheese, or ice cream (PostgraduateMedicine, 1994;95). Symptoms include stomach pain, gas, and diarrhea.
Lactose is a milk sugar and is made up of two other sugars, glucose and galactose. Galactose has been identified as a causative factor in heart disease, cataracts, and
glaucoma. Most adults "lack" the enzyme, lactase, to break down lactose. Instead, lactose is broken down by bacteria in the lower intestines. Their own body wastes combine with those sugars to ferment into toxins causing bloating and cramps.
Diseases and Conditions Caused By Cow's Milk
All these articles come from NotMilk.Com
Acidic Blood: Heart & Bone Disease: One of those "essential" amino acids is methionine.
One needs methionine for many human metabolic functions including digestion, detoxification of heavy metals, and muscle metabolism. However, an excess of methionine can be
toxic and create that acid condition in your blood.
The center atom of methionine is sulfur. That's the problem. Eat foods containing too much methionine, and your blood will become acidic. The sulfur converts to sulfates and weak
forms of sulfuric acid. In order to neutralize the acid, in its wisdom, the body leaches calcium from bones.
This is the main reason why we have osteoporosis. It is not how much calcium that we ingest but how much our bodies retain. In the article is goes to show just how much calcium is lost. "Consumption of dairy products, particularly at age 20 years, were associated with an increased risk of hip fractures... metabolism of dietary protein causes increased urinary excretion of calcium." {American Journal of Epidemiology 1994;139}"
Homocysteines are normal breakdown products of METHIONINE and are believed to exert a number of toxic effects in the body.
ALLERGIES: Processed cow's milk, has been linked to a variety of health problems, including: mucous production, hemoglobin loss, childhood diabetes, heart disease, atherosclerosis, arthritis, kidney stones, mood swings, depression, irritability, ALLERGIES."
Townsend Medical Letter, May, 1995, Julie Klotter, MD
"At least 50% of all children in the United States are allergic to cow's milk, many undiagnosed. Dairy products are the leading cause of food allergy, often revealed by diarrhea, constipation, and fatigue. Many cases of asthma and sinus infections are reported to be relieved and even eliminated by cutting out dairy."
Natural Health, July, 1994, Nathaniel Mead, MD
Breast Cancer : The article quotes from many journals of medicince about the IGF-I hormone that is directly responsible for Breast Cancer Research this Ladies and Gentlemen. Cow's Milk does NOT do the body Good!
Acne: Acne occurs when steroids (androgens) stimulate the sebaceous glands within the skin's hair follicles. These glands then secrete an oily substance called sebum. When sebum, bacteria and dead skin cells build up on your skin, the pores become blocked, creating a pimple.'About 80 percent of cows that are giving milk are pregnant and are throwing off hormones continuously.' Progesterone breaks down into androgens, which have been implicated as a factor in the development of acne...Dr. Fisher observed that his teenage acne patients improved as soon as the milk drinking stopped."
These are a few of the conditions and diseases caused by cow's milk. There are other forms of milk that are better for you and there are other ways that you can get your calcium and Vitamins. They are discussed next.

Milk Substitutes
Soy: The good: The benefits from soy is that it contains a large amount of healthy compounds including protein and is high in fiber than becasue it is made from beans. It contains isoflavanoids which help in the prevention of certain diseases like Breast Cancer, but lack calcium.
The Bad: Some have reported that dirnking lots of Soy Milk is making homosexuals. Soy is making kids 'gay' written by Jim Rutz, tells us how this is affecting our youth. I would take this with a grain of salt thought only because most of us who grew up in the 70's didn't even know what Soy Milk was.
Rice: The Good: Rice milk is one of several 'grain milks' used as a substitute for cow's milk. Since no animal products are used during the production of rice milk, it is considered an acceptable alternative by strict vegans and vegetarians. Because rice milk does not contain lactose, it is also suitable for those who are lactose-intolerant. Rice milk can also be used to create dairy substitutes such as coffee creamers and ice creams. Rice milk contains very little protein, but provides carbohydrates and is often fortified with essential vitamins.
The Bad: According to Dr. Ben Kim, Rice is not a good alternative to Cow's Milk Either. He states:"Many brands of soy and rice milk contain polyunsaturated vegetable oils which can contribute to an imbalance of essential fatty acids in your body. As harmless as this might sound, I am convinced that a chronic imbalance of essential fatty acids caused by regular consumption of polyunsaturated vegetable oils is a major cause of cardiovascular disease..........Some brands of soy and rice milk contain rice syrup, evaporated cane juice, or some other natural sweetener. Natural or not, most sweeteners put significant stress on your pancreas and liver. They also raise your insulin levels, which significantly increases your risk of suffering from unhealthy weight gain, high blood pressure, heart disease, premature aging, and several other negative side effects."
Almond :The Good: Almond milk is a milk substitute created by finely grinding almonds together with water. It enjoys a long history as a popular food. Medieval European recipes frequently called for almond milk. As well, it has always been a popular beverage in the Middle East. The modern blender makes the composition of almond milk much easier than it would have been in the Middle ages, because the blended almonds are much finer, resulting in a finer consistency milk.
The Bad: I found nothing bad on this kind of Milk.
Hemp Milk: A great place to learn about this is on The Benefits of Hemp Milk. It does not contain any of the chemical THC (tetrahydrocannabinol), which is found in marijuana.
Goats Milk: It is the milk that most other countries prefer other than Cow's Milk. It is full of vitamins which includes, Tryptophan, Calcium, Phosphorus, Vitamin B2, protein and potassium. For more information you can visit The World's Healthiest Foods.
Calcium and Other Ways To Get It
There are may vegetables that offer high volumes of calcium in them, just as much as in that glass of Cow's Milk.
Some other sources are:Sesame Seeds, Spinach, Collard Greens and Turnip greens (all greens cooked) and Blackstrap molasses.
What would you do if there were no more Cow's Milk in the world? How would you get your calcium and what would you feed your babies?

Many people use soy as a substitute for milk. I think soy is considered a good substitute because of the lipids.
Lady Guinevere, thanks for the additional information. Have sebaceous cysts been causally linked to milk consumption?
I agree that there are many are other good sources of dietary fat besides milk. Also, there are other sources for calcium. But what exactly is it that the bad effects of milk are linked to, besides lactase?
Why are some people less tolerant of lactose than others?
I think I agree with LG that unprocessed cattle milk is one of the poisons of our civilization. Surprisingly, I can't tolerate milk, too - so take my opinion with a grain of salt. :)
Interesting isn't it how so many things are changing in the world today. I have recently written a post http://hubpages.com/hub/How-to-tell-if-your-baby-h about the allergies of children and milk.
I would also like to add that soy is VERY dangerous for males. It reduces the testestrone in the body and has unknown effects. The results won't be seen for many years espically for the infants who have been given soy in place of milk. Soy does not have as dangerous effects on females since our testosterone is lower to begin with. But with male boys it is a very scary prospect to give them the equivilant of birth control at the time that they need to have high levels of testosterone. Mary Auduete just wrote a very detailed article on this as well.
Personally we cut dairy out of our diet long ago and some of the effects we personally noticed was severely reduced phlegm, better respitory function, and our daughter is 2 and has never had dairy, yet her calcium levels are fine due to the increase in broccoli etc that we gave her.
Broccoli doesn't go with chocolate chip cookies...and that's all I'll say on the subject.
Well we are all different..and found some very interesting information here...and Goat's milk is a good source also...Is pre-digested and tastes really good...however don't know all the facts...just my 2 cents ... Thanks for a great hub G-ma :o) hugs
spryte- lol, you are right, it does not go as good with cookies, but it is a much better source of nutrients than cow's milk, but then I guess cookies kinda nullify that but they are good aren't they!
For as long as child requires it. Mom just needs to pay attention, and then the moment of breast rejection becomes obvious. Our kids both did this around a year and a half.
Milk has been a part of people's diet from time immemorial - remember the 'land flowing with milk and honey'? It is also an excellent source of calcium. However, there are certain people who are lactose intolerant and they should find calcium from other sources for their needs. There are also people who are allergic to cow's milk - they have the option of drinking goat's milk. While soy is easily digested by most Far Eastern people (many of whom by the way are lactose intolerant), it isn't as easily digested by most other races.
Many women are asked to increase the amount of milk they drink to prevent osteporosis. It is one of the best sources of calcium. The thing is to determine whether you feel good drinking it or not.
Ah well, I love my milk so I guess I'm prejudiced :)
If there were no more milk, yes, I would look at other sources like salmon or sardines perhaps.
Hi, I just wanted to let you know that I provided a link to this site on my new hub on milk:
http://hubpages.com/hub/The-Matter-of-Milk
what?! why i don't see anything wrong with drinking milk
it doesn't make any sense
I do not tolerate cow's milk and i don't miss it because I hate the flavour anyway. I have been drinking soy, almond and rice milk instead for the past 8 years. I feel all the better for it.
I enjoy a glass of milk with chocolate cake. Can't eat it without it :)
A little knowledge is a VERY dangerous thing. These anti-milk rants are instigated and produced by the Animal Rights (NOT Animal WELFARE, BTW, and there is a huge difference!) Industry.
Read this:
then follow the links and read them too.
Then, know that, with the enthusiastic support of my Cardiologist, who USED to think SHE was Lactose Intolerant until she tried fresh raw milk, I have 1., *reduced* my LDL and total Cholesterol, and 2., lost 25 lbs in 1.5 years, by drinking whole fresh raw Jersey milk. She buys hers at a farm south of Winchester. I don't have to go quite that far.
Please do the research, and don't let the antis use you as a tool :-)
My comment above had the link stripped :-(

Humans are the only species to consume milk past the stage of infancy. Then we add to that the milk from another species and all sorts of problems must arise. Our society is so off base with the milk obsession. My son has never had cow's milk. Once he was weaned from the breast, he began using soy milk and still does. For daycare to give him soymilk that I provide, I had to bring a doctor's note. Isn't that crazy?
I firmly believe America's milk consumption causes obesity, diabetes, asthma and other ailments. Thanks for a thought provoking Hub.

Lady Guinevere,
I'm not that big a drinker of milk myself, but I'm not sure I follow completely. Is your argument that milk should be avoided because there are many other sources of calcium? But surely that's not why people drink milk -- just for the calcium. Isn't it also a very good source of dietary fat? Is there as much fat in turnip greens as there is in milk? What about cream or butter?
